Channel Description

Writer’s Cramp / Focal Dystonia

Writer’s Cramp is a work-related neurological disorder. When writing, the thumb or index finger suddenly loses control or feels weak. In the early stage, the hand feels tired or “stuck.”

Many patients experience hand tremors. The more they try to grip the pen tightly, the more the fingers shake, making writing difficult. Over time, tremors may spread to the whole hand and sometimes even other body parts.

Because of this, handwriting becomes shaky, irregular, very small or very large, or distorted. Under stress, urgency, anger, or in front of others, writing or signing may become almost impossible.

Writer’s Cramp is not a muscle problem. It is a dysfunction of the brain’s Basal Ganglia – Thalamus – Sensorimotor Cortex circuit, which sends incorrect signals to the hand while writing. This causes sudden twisting, tremors, or stopping of movement.
