Carmela's Sanctuary of Squirrels

Carmela's Sanctuary of Squirrels is a wildlife refuge where we hand raise orphaned baby squirrels and release them once old enough. We also care for injured and ill adult squirrels that are brought to the Sanctuary by compassionate, caring individuals. There are several videos of Carmela - for whom the Sanctuary was named. Carmela came here as an orphan after a major windstorm blew the nest out of the tree. When we got her she was on death's doorstep. She was emaciated, dehydrated, hypothermic and in a torpor/coma. We were able to save her and she became very special to the entire family. Carmela lived for 5.5 years, visiting our yard daily. On her visits, she would climb up our legs, onto our shoulders and wait for nuts that she could bury. She was a very gamine little squirrel with a lot of personality!
