Channel Description

The modern political history of the Philippines and Southeast Asia is a rich, complicated, and contentious field of study. Revolutionary movements and authoritarian regimes shaped this period. Scholarly analysis that is accessible to a broad public audience is needed to combat widespread misinformation.

Joseph Scalice (PhD, UC Berkeley) is Assistant Professor of Southeast Asian History at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Dr. Scalice's book, The Drama of Dictatorship: Martial law and the Communist Parties of the Philippines (Cornell University Press, 2023), explains how Ferdinand Marcos imposed martial law in 1972 and uncovers the critical roles played by two rival Communist Parties in the events. He has published articles in Modern Asian Studies, Critical Asian Studies, History and Anthropology, Journal of Southeast Asian Studies, Diplomatic History and other journals.
