The printing press was so effective because it functioned differently from earlier methods of printing. Gutenberg took China's move able type technology and improved upon it. The device had a handle that was turned to put pressure on a piece of paper. Wooden blocks with letters were arranged on a paddle in reverse. The paper would then be pressed with the moveable type that had been arranged on a paddle.
