Geological Institute Presidency University

The Geological Institute, which is housed in the Department of Geology, Presidency University (Erstwhile Presidency College, Kolkata, India), Kolkata was set up in 1905. The Department of Geology, established in 1892, is the oldest geology teaching department in India. The Institute was founded to encourage the students and research scholars to discuss and cultivate beyond the standard curriculum of Geology under the mentorship of the faculty members. It is therefore entirely run by students of the Department of Geology, since its inception, and boasts of the oldest such Institute in Asia. The institute organizes Academic Discussions (Seminars, Symposiums, Lectures, Memorial Lectures) and has played an instrumental role in introducing Earth Sciences to High School students by organizing outreach programs so that they can be motivated to pursue Geological sciences. Bhu-Vidya, the annual journal of the Institute is the oldest geological magazine in India.
