Chee Soon Juan (徐顺全) is a Singaporean politician and political activist. He is currently the secretary-general of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), a role he has held since 1996.
Chee believes in and advocates for democracy, human rights, transparency, accountability, justice and equality for a better Singapore. As the head of the SDP, he endeavours to lead the party in bringing about progressive ideas, humanitarian values and positive changes through alternative policies, which he sees as his duty in public service.
During the earlier days of his more than two decades of political involvement, he advocated the use of non-violent civil disobedience to challenge the PAP government and to push its legal boundaries for reforms of its authoritarian system. Largely as a result of his perseverance, the Speakers’ Corner was established as a venue for free speech (in 2000) and public protests (in 2008) in Singapore.
