With the immortal glory acquired during its illustrious history of more than 300 years, The Government Jiwaji Observatory is still standing tall with its distinguished medieval yantras and modern astronomical instruments in the Ujjain city of Madhya Pradesh (India). Today, it is operated and maintained by the Maharishi Patanjali Sanskrit Sansthan, Bhopal under the aegis of School Education Department, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh.
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II of Jaipur initiated the construction of this observatory in the first half of the 18th century. He established a total of 5 such observatories between 1719-1734, also known as Jantar Mantars, in 5 cities of Northern India. The Jiwaji Observatory holds a significant place among these due to its geographical and cultural position, as the city of Ujjain is located near the Tropic of Cancer.
