Igor Stravinsky Channel Description Snapshot

Channel Description

Igor Stravinsky is widely regarded as the most original and influential composer of the 20th century. Following his studies with Rimsky Korsakov in St Petersburg between 1905-08, Stravinsky’s early works were heard by ballet impresario and founder of the Ballets Russes Sergei Diaghilev, who commissioned ‘The Firebird’. Further collaborations included ‘Petrushka’ and ‘The Rite of Spring’ which saw composer move from nationalism towards vibrant modernism.

The wartime period brought a radical experimental phase to Stravinsky’s writing, with ‘Pulcinella’ launching his neo-classical phase which dominated the 1920s-40s, with major works from this period including ‘Oedipus Rex’, ‘Symphony of Psalms’, and ‘The Rake's Progress’.

At outbreak of Second World War, Stravinsky moved to USA, settling in California. Hallmarks of Igor Stravinsky’s style, in whatever period, are Russian folk inflections, rhythmic energy, and orchestral virtuosity.
