From a meeting in an Edinburgh coffee house in 1812, Scotland's first mutual life office was born. Its original intention was to set up 'a general fund for securing provisions to widows, sisters and other females' but by the time Scottish Widows opened for business in 1815 it had a wider remit. The novelist Sir Walter Scott was one of the first customers in 1824.
