"PUSHOUT: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools" is a feature length prime-time television special on the educational and judicial disparities facing African American girls in the United States.
The film, based on Dr. Monique W. Morris’ ground-breaking book of the same name, confronts the criminalization and miseducation of Black girls that has led to their alarming high school dropout rate and increase into the juvenile justice system. PUSHOUT looks at education’s revolving door into the juvenile justice system, mainstream society’s perception of Black girls and examine what it will take to make certain these vulnerable youth are not dismissed as throwaway kids.

The finished documentary takes a deep dive into the systemic cultural beliefs, politics and practices that criminalize and dehumanize Black girls in America and couples that with thoughtful analysis that points the way to the work being done to assure a far more just and equitable future for these girls.
